Charlie Chaplin
Verse One:
Charlie was a poor boy,
But he yearned to be more,
Watched his mom on stages,
Studied from a side door,
It wasn't long before he stepped,
Right on that center stage,
Started off singing and danced,
What a clever age,
He kept perfecting his art,
He made the crowd laugh,
He'd make 'me stand up,
And then they'd all clap,
His smile faded when he'd leave,
Man he'd grip the curtain,
The real world was so different,
It was always hurtin',
So he'd armor up himself,
Then he'd walk around,
Looking for some beauty,
Or a wonderful sound,
Women's voices,
Echoed from the hall,
He liked to watch 'em,
He wanted to protect them all,
He saw what happened to his mom,
So he watches his step,
He wants to make a career,
Get a bigger rep,
Discovers moving pictures,
Sends some letters quick,
Ready to sail across the ocean,
He's on a trip.
Verse Two:
He drops his bags into the dust,
And makes his way on set,
The director yells cut,
This ain't the dude they expect,
Charlie busts a performance,
He's got the crew laughing,
The director's laughing too,
And now he's Hollywood acting,
With a cane and a bowler hat,
Creates a new identity,
The world sees a tramp,
He sees a perfect remedy,
For the world's troubles,
He's got 'em laughing it off,
They see a friend on the screen,
His career takes off,
He keeps on making movies,
So Charlie grows in power,
The biggest name on Earth,
Now here comes the cowards,
They start attacking the artist,
They don't like his works,
They break out the big guns,
Congress at its worst,
They wanna label him red,
They want to end his reign,
They want to end his career,
But he just keeps with the cane,
And when the silent movies end,
He's got a hell of a speech,
He leaves 'em all speechless,
His art promoted peace.
Verse Three:
The first global movie star,
And they kicked him out the country,
America should be ashamed,
They left the planet hungry,
All they wanted was to laugh,
So that they could connect,
Charlie Chaplin knew their lives,
So he had their respect,
They would show up in those seats,
And they'd wait for his walk,
Laughed until they cried,
But now he waved to New York,
The Statue of Liberty,
Was now at his back,
The land of the free,
Had made its attack,
His ship sailed to Europe,
He made a home in Switzerland,
But he wanted Hollywood,
To come and kiss again,
It would take a lot of years,
Before the crime was erased,
They robbed the world of Charlie's art,
What a disgrace,
They grabbed him when he was old,
And gave him an Academy Award,
For his lifetime of work,
He'd opened every door,
Every artist on the planet,
Owes a big debt,
He didn't need to say it,
Quiet on the set.
Outro:
“Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world,
Millions of despairing men, women and little children,
Victims of a system that makes men torture, and imprison innocent people,
For those who can hear me I say, do not despair,
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed,
The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress,
The hate of men will pass and dictators die,
And the power they took from the people will return to the people,
And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men,
Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts,
You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!”
